I could be wrong about this, but when you see a stranger reply to your post on the Fediverse, that stranger is:
A) Rarely someone on your instance
B) A follower of one of your followers
I don't think it's generally the case that random strangers get sent someone's post. The few times it happens, they're usually brigading because someone who IS a friend of a friend told their followers to go pick on you. But they had to actively tell them, and share the link, before anyone got to see your post.
So unless you're actively under attack, a stranger replying to your post is most likely someone who follows someone who follows you. Whatever you make of it, that seems to be the case.
