Resource request time!

I've got some old hardware that I'd like to try to develop a custom ROM for. The ROM is, fortunately, on a chip that can just be pulled from its socket and replaced. I don't, however, know much about the architecture of the device how the memory map works, how to handle its I/O etc. My hope is that I can dump the current ROM, decompile it, work out enough of an understanding of the commercial setup to make something crude for my own purposes, write that to a new chip, and pop it in.

I've never actually done anything like this. Some of y'all have, though! Maybe you can help me get started

What do I need, in terms of both hardware and software, to dump the ROM

What do I need to replace the ROM

The thing that separates the TTRPG hobby from most others is commitment. The oft-stated platonic ideal of TTRPG gameplay, the long-running campaign, requires you and three to five other people to carve out time on at least a monthly (and preferably more frequent) basis for possibly years in order to play through a game of typical length. Although one-shots certainly exist, as well as con games where you need only bring yourself, fact is that if we talk about how mainstream RPGs are designed, the campaign is how theyre meant to be used. While every hobby improves with time and experience, your bicycle doesnt care how often you ride it, your skis dont care how many times you make it to a mountain each winter. Traditional RPGs, typified by D&D but including the vast majority of games published from a sales basis, have entire chapters of rules which are only applicable if youre playing the game over an extended period of time.
